DEPOT: Pūanga – Matariki 2026: Te Waka o Rangi
Saturday, 4 July - Saturday, 15 August
10:00 - 16:00

Exhibition Opening: Saturday 4 July, 2–4 pm. Artists Kōrero and Wānanga, 3pm

Pūanga–Matariki explores the rich kōrero shared across the Pacific Rim about our celestial whānau and the many ways different cultures understand these majestic stars. Though our stories vary, they all remind us of the same truth: the heavens hold the memories of our past, the lessons of our present, and the hopes we carry into the future.
This exhibition honours those who have passed, acknowledging the wisdom they leave behind and the responsibility we hold to carry their teachings forward. By looking to Pūanga, Matariki, and the wider cosmos, we are reminded of our deep relationship with the natural world. The guidance of our ancestors shapes how we walk upon the earth, how we care for our environment, and how we nurture the generations yet to come.

The Vic: Left of Centre Comedy with Tom Sainsbury
Wednesday, 5 August - Wednesday, 5 August
19:00 - 21:00

Labour Auckland North Presents: Left Of Centre Comedy

Politics is serious business, but every once in a while, you've got to laugh, or you'll cry. This election year, the North Shore Labour team are trading the policy debates for punchlines and bringing you a night of top-shelf comedy at The Vic. Headlining the evening is the one and only Tom Sainsbury - comedian, impressionist and national treasure. He’s joined by a stellar supporting cast: Liv McKenzie, Tony Lyall, Courtney Dawson, and it’s all hosted by Evie Orpe. Expect sharp wit, big laughs, and maybe just a little catharsis about the state of the nation. And the best part? Every dollar you spend on a good time goes directly toward putting great people into Parliament. All proceeds support our incredible North Shore candidates:
Sam Collins — North Shore
Shanan Halbert — Northcote
Estefania Muller Pallarès — Whangaparaoa
Brendan McEnroe — East Coast Bays
Hannah Pia Baral — Upper Harbour
Come for the laughs. Stay for the democracy. Grab yours before they're gone, like this Coalition Government on the 7th November.

Celebrate 50 years of Sir Roger Hall's Plays
Tuesday, 11 August - Tuesday, 11 August
18:30 - 20:30

Phoenix Theatre presents 50 Years of Sir Roger Hall’s Plays - a special celebration evening of NZ's most prolific playwright
50 years to the night since Roger Hall’s first play, Glide Time, took to the stage, we’re celebrating his incredible career with a special Q&A, tributes, and a chance to get a taster of what you’re in for with September’s anniversary season of Glide Time.
Tickets: $20 including supper. Cash bar available.

On 11 August 1976, a play about a small government office in Wellington opened at Circa Theatre and changed New Zealand theatre forever. Glide Time sold out so fast that the waiting list passed a thousand names. It transferred to a bigger venue to keep up with demand, toured the country, and went on to inspire Gliding On, the sitcom that became a Kiwi institution. Fifty years later, to the night, we’re celebrating the man who wrote it. Sir Roger Hall is New Zealand’s most prolific and most performed playwright. In a career spanning five decades, he has written more than 40 plays, and Glide Time was the one that started it all, the play Sir Roger himself has called “the big break that allowed me to become a full-time writer.”

The honours have followed the work. Middle Age Spread transferred to London’s West End for a fifteen-month run and won the Comedy of the Year award from the Society of West End Theatres. Sir Roger holds an honorary Doctorate of Literature from Victoria University, a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, the Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement, and, in 2019, a knighthood: Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to theatre.

Half a century on, the office workers of Glide Time are returning to the stage, and we’re marking the occasion the only way that felt right: an evening built entirely around the man who gave them to us. Join us on 11 August, exactly fifty years since the curtain first rose, to celebrate the playwright who has spent half a century holding up a mirror to New Zealanders and giving us permission to laugh at what we saw.

Glide Time
Friday, 18 September - Friday, 2 October
19:30 - 21:50

7.30pm - Fri 18, Sat 19, Wed 23, Thurs 24, Fri 25, Sat 26, Wed 20 Sep, Thurs 1, Fri 2 Oct
2pm - Sat 19, Sun 20, Sat 26, Sun 27 Sep

Fifty years since its first performance, Phoenix Theatre proudly presents Roger Hall’s smash hit Glide Time, the play that inspired the TV classic Gliding On. Step back into a time when office chairs squeaked, memos were handwritten, and the tea break was sacred. This beloved Kiwi comedy brings the quirks of 1970s public service life to the stage with razor-sharp wit, painfully familiar characters, and laugh-out-loud moments that still hit home today. Whether you once worked in a government office or just love a smart, character-driven comedy, you’ll recognise the personalities, politics, and passive-aggressive paper shuffling that define life behind the desk. It’s a workplace time capsule full of charm, chaos, and classic Kiwi humour. But this is more than just a comedy; it’s a slice of New Zealand’s cultural history. First performed in 1976 and still as relevant as ever, this play captures a moment in time with humour, heart and honesty. It’s a celebration of everyday people, of workplaces that frustrate and comfort in equal measure, and of finding laughter in the small moments. As we mark 50 years since its debut, this is your chance to experience (or re-experience) a true Kiwi classic, live on stage.

Creative Talks: Darrell Daglish - So how do you play that?
Monday, 28 September - Monday, 28 September
19:00 - 20:30

South Island-born Darrell plays the cornet, trumpet and flugelhorn, and is a member of the North Shore Concert Band. For 35 years, he worked for a Swiss engineering company, which researched, manufactured and marketed joint replacement prostheses, requiring travel to Switzerland once or twice each year. At various social functions and events, there were Swiss alphorn players. He got to try and play one on a few occasions, and so it became his dream to own one… In 2019, the dream came true. Darrell will share the story of the Swiss alphorn, how he became a very proud owner of one and bring his ‘prized possession’ to show and even play for us!

Creative Talks: Richard Hills - Why the arts are important
Monday, 19 October - Monday, 19 October
19:00 - 20:30

Richard is a Councillor for the North Shore on the Auckland Council and Chair of the Policy, Planning and Development Committee. He has led much of the Council’s major policies and strategies, such as the Future Development Strategy, Economic Development Strategy and Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri: Auckland’s Climate Plan. Richard is a big supporter of the arts across Tāmaki Makaurau and the Shore. He credits his background in communications, some very amateur stand-up comedy experience, and even winning the drama cup in high school, for setting him up with many creative skills that help him do this job, respond to media, and chair a passionate bunch of personalities around the council table. He says, “There is theatre in everything, and there sure is a lot in politics!”
