July brings Matariki, a time for reflection, reconnection, and sharing creative moments with others. We’re excited to be celebrating this special time in lots of creative ways.
At our main gallery at 28 Clarence Street, ten ringa toi (artisan makers) working across whakairo (carving), raranga (weaving), and uku (clay) come together for Pūanga – Matariki: Te Waka o Rangi. This group exhibition offers contemporary perspectives on our celestial stories, with works that speak to remembrance, renewal, and our relationship with the natural world. Join us for the opening on Saturday 4 July, from 2–4pm. Stay for a wānanga at 3pm to learn more about Pūanga, Matariki, and the whakaaro that underpins the exhibition, with insights from the participating ringa toi.
Across the village in the historic Devonport Council Borough building at 3 Victoria Road, Depot Shop | Toi Toa is home to an ever-evolving collection by new and returning artists. This Matariki, we're proud to showcase works by a range of Māori makers, highlighting contemporary practices across jewellery, weaving, carving, and other art forms. We’re thrilled to have Keri-Mei Zagrobelna as our July Maker of the Month. Of Te Āti Awa and Whānau-ā-Apanui descent, Keri-Mei is a contemporary Māori jeweller whose practice brings together heritage, adornment, and storytelling. She carries the Toi Iho mark, recognising authenticity and quality in Māori art. Her copper, silver and gold hand-woven Whetū pieces sit alongside works from her Niho and Aonui collections, each one thoughtful, personal and quietly striking.
While visiting our gallery and shop at 3 Vic Rd, you can also pop into our ceramics studio or book online over the school holidays – the ideal holiday activity! It's a welcoming space where creativity can flow freely, and every piece is carefully glazed and fired by accomplished ceramicist Fiona MacKay before heading home with its maker.
There are plenty of ways to get involved through July. Our First Thursdays Sip n’ Paint evenings continue, alongside life drawing sessions with Katie Thornton. We're also hosting Matariki workshops in raranga, whakairo, and taonga pūoro, opening up opportunities to learn, try something new, or deepen existing practice.
Whether you're here for an exhibition, to make something by hand, or simply to spend time in a creative space, you are always welcome. Explore more at depot.org.nz
