Helping the people who help our communities

Two free online resources, now in ANCAD’s care, offer practical support for local clubs, charities and community groups.

Behind every local sports club, community garden, arts group and charity are people making things happen. They organise events, manage finances, support volunteers and keep things running, often alongside jobs and family commitments. But who helps the people doing the helping?

At ANCAD, supporting community organisations is at the heart of our work. In October, we welcomed two established national resources into our care: CommunityNet Aotearoa and NZ Navigator, previously managed by the NZ Navigator Trust. For North Shore residents involved in community life, these free online tools offer practical support, whether you have just joined a committee or have been helping lead an organisation for years.

CommunityNet Aotearoa is an online resource hub for community organisations. It brings together guides, templates, tools and advice to help with the everyday questions that come with running a group. Need to understand your committee’s responsibilities, plan a project, improve your communications or explore ways to raise funds? CommunityNet provides a useful starting point. Its Community Resource Kit covers everything from getting a group established to managing meetings, finances and planning.

NZ Navigator helps your organisation step back and look at the bigger picture. This free online self-assessment tool explores areas such as leadership, governance, finances, people and relationships, helping identify what is working well and where attention is needed. You can involve board members, staff and volunteers, bringing different perspectives into the conversation. The resulting report helps you identify priorities and plan improvements, with links to supporting resources.

Used together, the two websites can help turn “we really should sort that out” into a practical next step. ANCAD is proud to build on the NZ Navigator Trust’s work and care for these resources for communities across Aotearoa. If you volunteer, serve on a board or know someone who does, take a look and pass the links on. A little practical support can make a meaningful difference.
