Our beautiful backyard is waiting, and this season, we have something for everyone. The rising of the Matariki (Pleiades) star cluster marks the start of the Māori new year, a time of reflection, remembrance, and renewal. It's a moment to honour what has been, and to look forward with intention. What better way to celebrate than getting outside, connecting with the natural world, and planting seeds – literally – for the future?
These school holidays, Pupuke Birdsong Project has a full programme of free, family-friendly events. Whether you're a regular face at our events or you've never joined us before, you are warmly welcome.
Matariki night tours, Sylvan Park
Step into a stunning mature pūriri forest right on the edge of Lake Pupuke to learn about the story of Matariki, the significance of the stars in Māori culture, their connection to our wildlife and environment, and the fascinating nocturnal creatures that call this park their home. And we'll warm you up with a hot chocolate at the end!
Matariki tree planting, Killarney Park and Lyford Reserve
Celebrate the season of renewal by planting a native tree. A hands-on way to connect with these beautiful local parks and leave your mark on the landscape.
Discover Lyford Reserve
Explore this local gem with the family and discover how this reserve protects our community from flooding while supporting native wildlife. Kids will love the nature-themed treasure hunt, with prizes!
Rangatahi Restore Together, Friday 17 July
A special event for young people: come together to clear pest plants, care for the bush, and support te taiao, the environment. A great way for rangatahi to connect with nature and each other.
The cold is no reason to stay indoors. Wrap up, get muddy, and come and experience the wild, beautiful backyard on our doorstep. Search Pupuke Birdsong Project on Humanitix to see all upcoming events and register. A big thank you to Auckland Council, Devonport-Takapuna Local Board, and Healthy Waters for their ongoing support.
