North Shore theatre lovers are in for a special night as Phoenix Theatre marks a milestone moment: 50 years since the first staging of Sir Roger Hall’s iconic 'Glide Time'.
First performed at Circa Theatre in Wellington on 11 August 1976, 'Glide Time' captured the humour, quirks and rhythms of New Zealand life with unmatched wit. It then went on to become the popular TV hit classic, Gliding On, in the early 1980s. Half a century later, its sharp, observant humour still rings true, cementing Sir Roger’s place as one of our most celebrated playwrights.
To honour the anniversary, Phoenix Theatre is hosting an intimate, one-night-only celebration featuring Sir Roger himself, who is a long-time North Shore local and patron of the PumpHouse Theatre. A relaxed, social gathering, the evening will celebrate this iconic play and the playwright who is part of our cultural fabric. Guests are invited to enjoy a rare opportunity to spend time in the company of Sir Roger and his wife, Dianne, hearing stories and insights from his extraordinary career. A short preview scene from Phoenix Theatre’s upcoming production of 'Glide Time' will offer a sneak peek of the upcoming season, running at the PumpHouse from 18 September to
2 October. This will be followed by an informal Q&A with Sir Roger, emceed by Alison Leonard.
A relaxed, conversational evening, the event will reflect the warmth and wit of Sir Roger’s writing. Expect a nostalgic nod to 1976 with music from the era, archival images celebrating five decades of productions, and time to mix and mingle over light refreshments, with the bar open for drinks purchases. Tickets are priced at just $20, keeping the focus on bringing the community together to celebrate a shared love of theatre. Guests will also have the opportunity to purchase tickets on the night for the upcoming 'Glide Time' season at special reduced rates.
