Our round up of posts from local Long Bay spots on IG that we’ve double tapped (liked) and a Q&A with Georgia Spear from @longbaysurfclub

Long Bay Surf Club is a community-focused hospitality venue that prides itself on being a welcoming local hub where families, friends, and neighbours can come together and enjoy great food, drinks, and experiences. Georgia Spear is a local resident of Browns Bay and has been part of the Long Bay Surf Club team on two separate occasions. After taking a break to work in Georgia (USA),  she returned to the club in October 2025 and has since resumed her role as duty manager. Soon stepping into the position of customer experience representative, Georgia describes herself as the go-to person for both guests and staff whenever questions arise. Georgia is currently balancing two jobs while saving for her next big adventure. Her goal is to move to Europe next year and pursue a career in the superyacht industry as a deckhand, combining her love of travel, people and new challenges.

Channel Mag: Is Instagram a source of inspiration for LBSC? Who do you recommend following and why?
Georgia Spear: My manager is a millennial, so when it comes to Instagram, he's not exactly the expert. It often falls to me to keep him up to date with the latest trends and occasionally give him a lesson on how to put a post up! I think Instagram is a fantastic platform because it's accessible to everyone and makes it easy for content to reach a wide audience. Features like sharing, saving, and reels give posts the opportunity to go viral and generate strong engagement. One of our most successful pieces of content was our Mother's Day promotion video, which received great interaction from our followers and achieved exactly what we aim for with our social media.
A big part of our approach is taking popular trends and putting our own Long Bay Surf Club spin on them. It helps create content that's relatable, entertaining, and gives people a reason to engage with us. At the end of the day, if we can make people laugh and showcase the personality of the venue, we've done our job well.

Which other local businesses do social media well?
I think any business that is willing to try something new or create original content, rather than simply replicating what everyone else is doing, is worth paying attention to. Within our wider hospitality group, there are some venues doing a fantastic job on social media. Dr Rudi's has built content that aligns really well with its brand and personality, while Springs Tavern has set the benchmark for reels in our local area. Morningside Tavern consistently produces great sports content, particularly through its live event stories, which do an excellent job of capturing the atmosphere and engaging followers in real time. St Alice also stands out for the way it showcases a premium dining experience online, creating content that feels polished, aspirational, and true to the venue. I enjoy following businesses that aren't afraid to be creative and put their own spin on things, as that's often what resonates most with audiences

What’s happening at LBSC that you want locals to know about?
There's always something happening at Long Bay Surf Club. Our band nights are becoming a regular monthly event, taking place on the last Saturday of every month, and they're already proving to be a great night out for the community. We also have plenty of family days coming up, which are always incredibly popular, so I'd definitely recommend booking a table early to avoid missing out. With the All Blacks season back underway, match days are always a fantastic atmosphere, bringing everyone together to support the team. If you're looking to kick-start your weekend, our Friday night DJs are a local favourite and always create a great vibe heading into the weekend.
